Google Pixel 2 FRE LIFEPROOF Night Lite Case Review

I have never used a case on my phone before, but being that we live a fairly active life and the price of phones getting higher and higher, I thought it was time to give one a try.

I decided if I am going to put my phone in a case, I wanted to get something that actually protected it and protected it well. So after doing some research on the internet I decided to go with the LIFEPROOF case.  After looking at a few cases that friends have, and looking at cases on the internet I decided this one looked to give the most protection with adding the least amount of size to the phone.

They offer 10% off for your first order, so I ordered it once it was available for the Google Pixel 2.  I ended up receiving it the same day I received my Pixel 2.

Packaging is fairly simple and easy to open, here is what you see when you first slide open the box

The case comes in 2 pieces.

Included in the package is a micro fiber cloth, a "made for" google sheet, a Google sheet that explains the how to adjust active edge, and a LIFEPROOF information book.

The one thing missing was the little plastic pick to open the case.  I saw this on a lot of images and on LIFEPROOF's site.

After opening the case LIFEPROOF recommends water testing it before putting your phone inside.

Inserting the phone into the case is fairly simple, just clean the screens and put the front piece on first, then snap the back on.  Be sure to click the case closed the entire way around the phone.

I chose the Night Lite color, it is neon green and black. This should make it easy to see!  The black edge on the front has a rubbery feel to it.  This works great for me because I usually wear dress pants to work with slanted pockets, and it doesn't try to slide out like my old phone with no case.

The back of the case has more of a plastic feel to it.  Because of the 360 degree protection the finger print reader is covered by a plastic film.  I was surprised how well the finger print reader still works.  The swipe down gesture still works even with the film.

The buttons work, but they are a good bit harder to push then when the case is off.  The power button is a little easier to push than the volume buttons.  The volume buttons are pretty tough to push.  All buttons you can still fill the click and they work.  Now that I have had the case for a week, it seems that they are getting easier to push, or I am just getting use to it.

If you squeeze both sides of the case in the green area that says LIFEPROOF, the Active Edge feature works flawlessly.  As mentioned above there is also a sheet in the box that explains how to adjust the Active Edge feature to the amount of pressure that best works for you.

On top of the phone you can see the holes for what I think are the microphones.  All ports including microphones, speakers, cameras, LED, and sensors are also covered with a membrane to give the phone full 360 degree protection.

The bottom USB C port is covered by a flap.  There is also a small pin in the case that you can connect a strap to.  The strap was not included with the package.  It is just some 550 cord (para cord) and a connector and lanyard connector for an old camera I used.  I like this because it gives me something to grab onto, and wrap around my wrist if I am trying to get a picture somewhere I really don't want to drop my phone.

The flap on the bottom opens pretty easy.  This is one of the things I was not sure if I would like about the case, always opening and closing it, but I got use to it pretty quickly.

I have tried to dunk it in the water a few times and it seems to work, no water inside.  The only thing I should mention is that is sinks really quickly.  So if you are around deep water you might want to attach it to something that floats, if there is any chance you might drop it in.

The only issue that I had with the case is you could see a rainbow effect (newton rings).

After a quick call to LIFEPROOF they recommended a light puff of baby powder inside the case on the screen.  This eliminated the majority of the rings.  They can still be seen under some lights at certain angles.  They are very difficult to see with the screen on though.  I almost never notice them unless I look for them, and even then it has to be under the correct light.

The case is pretty pricey when compared to other cases, but I think the protection is worth it.  Now with some phones breaking the $1000 mark, I don't see myself ever going back to not using a case again.

I love this case, it is perfect for me.  I don't worry about my phone nearly as much as I use to without a case.  I don't get nervous when I hand it to my daughter to look at something or take a picture.

I am also find myself taking it on more adventures and getting more pictures on it, because I don't have to worry as much about dropping it or a little rain getting on it.  It also doesn't add a lot of size to the phone for the amount of protection you get.

2017 GORUCK Mogadishu Mile Tough Pittsburgh AAR

2017 GORUCK Mogadishu Mile Tough Pittsburgh started at 9:00 pm September 29th at Point State park.

Once at Point State park, it was easy to find all the participants standing around by the fountain.

It was great to see a lot of familiar faces.  After saying hi to a few people, it was time to get started.

We all got lined up and started through the normal admin process.  Basically, who is here, do you have your gear, and don't hurt yourself too bad.  Next we were split up into 4 squads, each with a squad leader.

After the admin phase, we all sat down and Cadre Pike introduced Jason Moore, one of the Rangers that was in Mogadishu during the events that took place.  It was an honor to have him there and amazing to here his stories of the events that took place.

Next the welcome party started, and it seemed a little shorter than normal, but later we found out why.  It ended up continuing throughout the night.

After getting warmed up we headed out of  Point State Park.  We made it about a quarter mile or so and Pike must have thought we looked a little cold, so he helped us warm up again.

After everybody was warmed up we headed over to the river and found a parking lot on the other side.  First we lined up and did a little PT in squads.  Lunges with rucks on the front and back across the parking lot.  Then some group push ups.

Shortly after we stopped and lined up, and Pike talked for a little while about what was going on in Mogadishu at that time on October 4th, 1993.

We continued about 1.5 miles on the Three Rivers Heritage Trail until we got to a boat ramp.  We lined up in our squads and went squad by squad into the water about waist deep.

After everyone got there chance to cool down we headed out.  We didn't make it too far until we stopped to pick up a few logs.

We probably carried the logs for a little over a mile.

After dropping off the logs we continued to ruck about 3 miles until reaching the Cathedral of Learning.  Here we got a little break and were able to refill our water and use the restrooms.

Next we made our way about 2 miles to Schenley Park, where more PT was waiting.  We lined up about 40 or so yards between the 2 trees, 2 squads on one line and 2 on the other.  Then we proceeded to do bear craws, crab walks, and low crawls pushing our rucks in front of us back and forth.

After a little more PT, we rucked between 4 and 5 miles to the Veterans Place, see more info here.  This was part of our service project.  At the beginning of the event we collected clothes and carried them throughout the event.  There was one large bin and several contractor bags full.  We dropped them off at this point.  They do a lot of great work to help our veterans.

After dropping off the clothes we headed back to the start location.  It was around 7 miles, and during this ruck the sun started to come up.  About 3 miles out we stopped in a parking lot, and Pike instructed us to drink water and get ready because it was going to get tough.

About 1.5 miles out we were given lots of casualties.

Believe it or not there was a lot of people wondering what was going on.

We finished at Point State Park where we started.

After getting back to the park we got a little final PT.  Then Jason came back and asked if we had any additional questions that we may have thought about on our journey.

This was my first event with Pike and he did a great job.  With Jason being there, it gave the event even more meaning.
